When do we count a match as a success? Does EH have a specific definition?

Can we say that a year's solid committed relationship is a success? Six months? Does it have to become a marriage engagement, or marriage? Does EH consider cohabitation over the long term a success? What do we define as long term?

Should we wait until a marriage has survived a certain amount of time? Three years? Five? Ten? Thirty?

I'm not trying to be a smarty-pants here, just curious as to how EH defines success (I think all of us - the customers - have the "I know it when I feel it" in mind) when they do their internal reports and planning.

In what context are you referring to use of the term "success"? For this forum, I suppose that it's just whatever someone who posts his or her success story considers to be a success.

Over on the section of the eH website titled "Success Stories," it looks like the couples featured there are all at least in serious, committed relationships ("in love"). The form for submitting one's story includes the following language: "If you're dating, engaged or married, please submit your information today, so we can keep in touch with you as your relationship progresses." I expect they don't post stories of the "We met 3 weeks ago and now we're in love!" nature, though...lol (you have to fill out the first page of the form to get to the next one, so I can't tell what sort of other information they might solicit about one's relationship before determining that it should be added...).

In any event, it appears that "success" is not measured only by marriage, or even being engaged. Perhaps it is that one has found love...

You are right, though, that there can be many different measures of "success" (successful match, successful relationship, successful marriage...). For eH, they at least want to produce successful matches, but it's clear that creating successful marriages is also a long-term goal for the company and I believe that some of their research has focused on that...

That's what I was wondering - do we, as the match-ees, have a different (perhaps more liberal?) definition of success than EH itself?

I consider my match to the Sweetie to be successful. For now. I can't say that in ten or twenty years I'll still be able to say the same thing, but for now, it's golden.

Perhaps "successful for now" is all we can hope for, realistically. That may fall into your "found love" category. It's certainly good enough for me.

I don't know how it can be quantified, though, in terms of corporate planning and reports.

I would definitely count you and your sweetie in the success column!

I don't know how eH measures its own success. No doubt there are numerous measures that it looks at. There are business-related evaluation questions -- has the customer base grown (especially of paying subscribers)? how many people are seeing ads (including non-paying customers)? There are service-releated questions -- are customers satisfied with the service (and if not, why not), are matches being made and delivered? Is the site working with a minimum of downtown and glitches? There are more global questions, too, that relate the larger purpose of eH -- Are successful matches being made? How many customers marry their matches? What is the longterm success of eH matches?

eH is unique in having a research arm staffed by well-qualified researchers, so it can probably look at some evaluation questions in greater depth more readily than most services. I know that the "236 people married every day" figure is based on survey research done for eH by Harris Interactive Research, but eH also does it's own research...
