Yeah - I imagine it would be! It is why I find it so fascinating that:

* the US has the kinds of advertisements I'm learning about in this thread
* this website is US based and locks down threads and deletes posts - I can't reconcile that to right of Free Speech at all. Am I missing something in my understanding of Free Speech?
You have Freedom of Speech as an individual, but that doesn't mean people have to let you use their website/platform/microphone to do it. So you can still speak freely, but you may have to use your own money to sponsor it.

I'm going to bet someone else can explain it better, but it's a decent first try.

Wow, 'tis true:

Australian Freedom of Speech Laws

Overview
The Australian Constitution does not expressly protect freedom of speech or expression. In 1992, however, the High Court of Australia held that a right to freedom of expression, in so far as public and political discussion were concerned, was implied in the Constitution.

This right was thought to be an essential requirement of democratic and representative government and thus implied into the Australian Constitution, which had established such a system of government. Subsequent cases have made determinations on the scope of this implied freedom. It has been found to extend to the publication of material:
- discussing government and political matters generally;
-relating to the performance of individuals of their duties as members of the Parliament; and
-discussing the performance, conduct and fitness for office of members of the Commonwealth and State legislatures.

The right does not extend to more generally to a right to freedom of expression where political issues are not involved.
Well done Ming!

A Bill of Rights has been trying to be passed since (I think) 1975 with Free Speech and other things which are legally in place, but not as a Right. Such as the right to be free of discrimination due to gender, religion, race, pregnancy etc etc.

Meri, the point of using Santa Claus to give this message is a reference to a true story involving an 11 year old girl named Virginia.

It was during the late 1800's in America. This young girl asked her father if there really was a Santa Claus. He father instructed her to write the local paper for her answer. Her father said if the editor said he was real then it was so. The now famous letter that virginia received back was beautiful. And the famous line was, "Yes, Virginia...there really is a Santa Claus."

I'm repeating this all from memory, so I probably have a few of the details wrong.
Thank you. I bet that little girl was thrilled.

I don't know if it is still enforceable (I assume it is), but you could get arrested for swearing in earshot of a police officer. I don't mean swearing at the police officer, just using foul language in his/her presence.
We have certain words you can't use over the airwaves (radio or TV) and you can be fined for using them. Do it enough and your Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license can be revoked. I've had an FCC license myself for about 15 years.

But it's a bit bizarre. If you say "G** D**m", they bleep the word "God" and allow the other. It's the combination that isn't allowed. I understand, but it's weird seeing the word "God" bleeped. I've heard "fart" bleeped, but you can say a LOT worse and it's okay. The rules are a a bit strange , but a lot more lax than they used to be, though.

In public, like out on the street, I'm not sure what the rules are. If there are any, they're definitely not enforced.

Hmm - so could you get arrested then if the people concerned believed what you were saying was maliciously damaging, defamatory etc?

I couldn't see getting arrested for that, though you could be removed from the property if the owner requested you leave, and you could be sued in court for slander or libel.

Interesting. We differ on this.

Taking the name of God or Jesus in vain is allowed with very few restrictions. I think children's shows are the only restriction - but then many shows children watch are rated for teenagers, so bang goes that theory!

Swearing, is allowed un-restricted after either 9pm or 9:30pm, I forget which. However, the program must be rated that it contains foul language with the letter L pictured on the screen and in the tv guide.

you have the essentials correct.

my problem with this ad is that is blatantly targets children. here it is the holiday season and we have a nice cheery picture of santa, who many of the children believe in, and he is telling them, "there is no god."

nice. very nice...
Yes, I see your point here. We had Santa when we were growing up. I would have been quite confused if I had seen this sign then.

You mean unlike the big stink that "some people" make every year now over folks who wish "Happy Holidays!", instead of "Merry Xmas" (oops sorry, "Merry Christmas!")...?
