I don't know about anybody else's browser, but when it comes to "reply" fields like this one, this one underlines in red what it detects to be tyops. (Including, yes, that "tyops" typo there.) And people are urged to be careful about the grammar and spelling in their profiles. These are a bit like resumes, after all.

I've replied, certainly, to people with typos in their profiles, and my current match is not the best speller in the world either, but there comes a point at which you--well, okay, I, a professional wordsmith have to just shake my head.

And these typos aren't at all like the dialects--ebonic or otherwise--that some posters on eHA and other discussion boards use. (I write fiction, too, so am fascinated by and genuinely enjoy that kind of thing.)

Firefox does that, but Explorer (which most people use) does not. It's really unfortunate that we have no way of viewing our own profiles on eH. It makes it so much more difficult to detect things like spelling errors that we just don't notice when typing in the little boxes (and the boxes they give us to type in for our profiles really are way too small!).

If the profile in question was chock full of typos, I would most likely pass. If there are few....then so what. I know plenty of very smart (even well-educated) people who are bad spellers (and typists!)...lol.

Can you please state how you're qualified to say that she isn't dealing with a learning disordered, besides you "sense"?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not qualified either...besides working in the school system with people intellectual disabilities and knowing that bad spelling isn't always due to a lack of education. But *I'm* not the one making judgements about her.

But I think that's really the secondary issue...have you thought about how it might feel for her to come to this board and read this thread? It could happen.

If you don't want to date her on the basis on her spelling, fine. No need to make fun of here in public about it...

Safari also flags typos. And yes, being able to view our profiles as others see them (as Chemistry.com does, for example) would make proofreading much easier.

But...er..duh...the researcher that came out with that ridiculous "ebonics" theory went to researcher doom the same way as the dumb schmuck that thought of the "Bell Curve". I'm an education researcher, and feel kinda sorry for folks that use erroneous data to support off-base views. They are a sight to pity!

So...since both theories have been largely ignored and dispelled by the research community and most level-headed folks, I'd say the writer of the e-mail is a loser, and needs to beef up on English before posting anymore e-mails.

Sorry..but as a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual person of color, I can't stand it when I see folks place finding a man/woman above acquiring basic communication skills (speaking,reading, writing) in the country they live in...you know the French would never stand for this!.....

I took a class where the professor said on the first day that it was an advanced course and he expected EVERYONE to use proper grammar and punctuation in their papers or he wouldn't even bother reading them. If anyone needed help, the resources were there, no excuses. Dating, or even choosing friends, is similar in that it boils down to expectations or requirements in a potential partner/friend. I've known plenty of people that were very book smart, had advanced degrees, but did not have emotional intelligence.
